Generator Load Planner

Enter each load with its quantity, electrical input kW, running power factor and starting kVA. The planner estimates running demand and starting scenarios to support a discussion with our team. It does not select a generator for you.

Enter the electrical input kW each load draws from the supply, not motor shaft output kW. Running kVA is input kW divided by the running power factor. Starting kVA must be a number at least equal to the item's running kVA, or left blank if unknown.

The reserve margin is an illustrative planning assumption you select, applied to running demand only.

Generator hire range

Our generator hire range includes 5kVA diesel single phase, 8kVA petrol single phase, 20kVA diesel three phase, 50kVA diesel three phase, 60kVA diesel three phase, 80 to 85kVA diesel three phase and 125kVA diesel three phase, plus hybrid options. The planner does not automatically match sizes to your loads because prime kW and kVA, phases and transient response are not validated here.

How the planner works

Method informed by public genset sizing resources from Cat and Cummins.

Running kW is the sum of quantity times input kW for each load. Running kVA is a conservative sum of apparent loads, quantity times input kW divided by power factor, with no diversity applied.

Sequential starting assumes all other loads are running when one load starts. It adds the largest positive difference between a load's starting kVA and its running kVA to the running kVA total. Simultaneous starting sums quantity times the greater of starting or running kVA for each load. Both are load demand estimates, not generator ratings.

The reserve margin, selectable from 0 to 50 percent with a default of 20 percent, is applied to running kW and kVA only. Phase and duty selections are recorded for discussion and are not used to convert or limit capacity. Loads with blank starting kVA are treated as unknown, not zero, and prevent a complete starting estimate.

What is the difference between kVA and kW?

kW is real power consumed by the load. kVA is apparent power, which accounts for power factor. A generator is rated in kVA or kW, or both, and the relationship depends on the power factor of your loads. That is why the planner shows both figures.

Why can't the planner choose my generator size?

Generator selection depends on prime or standby ratings, phase balance, motor starting data, voltage dip, harmonics and site conditions. The planner estimates load demand only, so our team verifies these details with you before recommending equipment.

What if I don't know the starting kVA of a load?

Leave the starting kVA field blank. Blank means unknown, not zero, and the planner will show running demand only with an explicit note that the starting estimate is incomplete. If a load has no surge, enter the same value as its running kVA.
